Does any seriously educated history buffs actually believe in any organized religion?

It seems that almost every devout Christian, Muslim, etc that I meet seems to have absolutely no clue as to the historical context in which their religion was developed. Seems to me that if you are going to believe in something to the death, shouldn't you be able to tell me exactly how it came to be?
