What did people do with all their 'status updates' before there was facebook and twitter?

i mean really, before we could ramble on one liners about our life, day, pet peeves to such an attentive crowd, where we just bursting with unvented info? I'm just wondering because it seems as if those who are not sharing statuses on facebook (myself included) are supposedly missing out on something... I'm interested to hear what y'all think on this
